Flag Techniques

1) When you are at right sholder, make sure the bottom tip of the flag is by your belly button with your left hand curled around the crutch tip with fingers together, not spread apart. Right hand shold be at the tape with fingers together also.

2) Be aggressive with your angles. make your hits/checkpoints sharp and crisp. This makes the work more exciting and enjoyable for the audience.

3) If your silk wraps up the pole while doing drop spins you are probably turning your wrists. Try keeping your thumbs straight . make sure your knuckles are parralell with the ceiling while tuning the flag. That should keep your flag from spinning.

4)While tossing it is very important to use proper technique. your release hand should be firm with fingers together like you would to tell someone to stop and your left hand should be along the seam of your pants fingers together of course.

5)Never allow the silk to get caught on the pole. When that happens it is called a sail. To avoid the dreaded sail never cut through the same path. Move slightly forward or back to avoid catching the silk on the pole.

6)When doing stirs you must take up space. On count one there should be no bend in the right elbow and you should strive to make both the top and bottom circles as large as can be.

7)When doing a toss, twist and thrust your arm. practice going over the motions without your flag.  It is sort of like twisting a heavy doorknob and thrusting it into the heavens.
